Since the Pulwama incident Pakistan and India relations are at all time low even the diplomatic relations have been downgraded and both the countries have called back their high commissioners from respective embassies at New Delhi and Islamabad. But in recent days there has been some positive developments and optics from both sides. The renewal of DGMOs agreement to scale down the number of cease fire violation on LOC in feb 2021 than the exchange of letters between Prime minister Imran Khan and Narendra Modi his Indian counter part and the speech of Pakistan military chief Genrel Qamar Javed Bajwa at Islamabad Security Dialogue to bury the hatchet and move on are indications of some form of normalcy between India and Pakistan is taking place. But is peace really possible with the Hindu nationalist BJP regime whose survival in power relies heavily on Anti Muslim and Pakistan rhetoric and the sheer strategic hawkishness they showcase against Pakistan at all levels is a question worth answering. we Pakistanis tend to sway with mere optics very easily nobody wants war with India here in Pakistan but peace at what cost? and how much this peace will last long? and why this sudden change in the behavior of Modi regime? without answering these question we should stay reluctant in moving forward with India and need to dig in deep to answer these questions. There are multiple factors at play which is compelling India to normalize with Pakistan the number one is Chinese factor Indian armed forces are facing some serious challenges at their border with China in Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Paradesh the reinforcements have been called in large numbers to stalemate the Chinese advance but the problem with Chinese border is that it stretches from Arunachal to Ladakh and its more than 3300 km and most of the border is un demarcated which gives an edge to China. The hollowness of India’s two front war strategy and military modernization have been exposed badly since their areal encounter with Pakistan in Feb 2019 post pulwama and border clashes with Chinese in Galwan sector of Ladakh in October 2020 So they are compelled to normalize with Pakistan to ease of their stress from eastern border and focus more on their border with China. Second factor is the change in American administration Biden was critical of Modi,s anti Muslim laws CAA, NRC and his abrogation of Kashmir special status which he revoked in August 2019, So in order to appease Biden he is lifting restrictions in occupied Jammu and Kashmir and talking peace with Pakistan is also Modi,s own requirement or may be a condition made by U.S administration for Modi to improve his image before setting first one on one meeting of President Biden and Narendra Modi. For a moment if we assume this process is purely organic and Modi is really wishing for Peace with Pakistan India has that strategic space to give some concessions to Pakistan on Kashmir by reversing Article 370 and 35A through Indian Supreme Court although the move would cost BJP so much but it is a possibility because Pre August 2019 Article 370 and 35A were non issues for Pakistan but Indian establishment have made this an diplomatic challenge for Pakistan by playing their cards smartly on other hand we have no leverage what so ever against India we should keep this in our mind. To validate my analysis about that making peace with Pakistan is now a requirement for Indian establishment to appease U.S administration i will take you back to February 1999 when Atal Bihari Vajpaaye made a surprise visit to Pakistan by bus through Wahga Attari border and made a hallmark speech at Minar e Pakistan the than Prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and his party members still take credit of that visit that we made this impossible thing possible but Musharaf ruined it with Kargil. Kargil was a strategic blunder on Musharaf side but claiming that Vajpaaye visit via bus to Pakistan was a result of effective diplomacy from Nawaz sharif is a complete folly because if we study the background of this visit both India and Pakistan detonated their nuclear devices in may 1998 and were facing extreme pressure and sanctions from U.S and E.U India were more at the loosing end because one they initiated this and second they were opening up as an global market to the world so sanctions were hurting their economic boom so to change their perception in west the Vajpaaye visit to Pakistan by bus was a well thought out and crafted plan of Indian establishment to send a message to west and the world that yes we are a nuclear power and rival but we are responsible also at the same time, so that visit served the purpose of India not Pakistan. The bottom line is that before moving ahead with India we have to be very cautious and pro active.
